How a Credit Union Adopted Zero Trust and Cut Critical Vulnerability Exposure
A regional credit union moved from a branch-and-VPN trust model to zero trust access, and replaced scan-and-forget patching with risk-based vulnerability management that its examiners could follow.
- 78%
- Fewer critical vulnerabilities open past SLA
- 14 days
- Mean time to remediate critical findings (from 61)
- 100%
- Privileged access under MFA and session review
The client
Regional credit union, 650 staff, 22 branches.
The challenge
Branch networks were trusted by default. Once a device was on the corporate network or the VPN, it could reach most internal systems, and a compromised teller workstation was only a few hops from core banking integrations.
Vulnerability scans ran monthly and produced reports of several thousand findings that nobody could prioritize. Critical items sat open for two months on average, and the same issues reappeared in examiner and internal audit findings.
The board, under pressure from regulators and the cyber insurer, asked for a roadmap that showed risk going down, not just activity going up.
The results
- Critical vulnerabilities open past their SLA fell by 78% within two quarters of the new process.
- Mean time to remediate critical findings dropped from 61 days to 14 days.
- All privileged access now requires multi-factor authentication and is time-limited, with sessions available for review.
- Repeat findings in internal audit dropped sharply because each fix is tracked to closure and retested.
- Branch staff access core applications with the same checks whether they are in a branch, at home or traveling.
“We stopped arguing about whether the network was trusted and started proving that each access was earned. The board now sees risk trending down every quarter.”
