What a SOC 2 report is, and what it is not
A SOC 2 report is an independent auditor's opinion, issued under attestation standards from the AICPA, on how a service organization's controls relate to the Trust Services Criteria: security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy. It is not a certification and it is not a pass or fail test of your technology. It describes your system, your controls and whether the auditor found those controls suitably designed and, for a Type II report, operating effectively over a period.
Customers request SOC 2 because it lets them assess your controls without auditing you themselves. A report that is well scoped and honestly written builds trust faster than a long questionnaire.
The shape of the journey
Most first-time programs follow the same stages. Understanding them early helps you plan people, budget and customer commitments.
- Scope and criteria selection
- Gap assessment against the criteria
- Policy and control implementation
- Evidence operation and readiness review
- Type I and/or Type II audit
