Why the questionnaire matters more than it looks
A cyber insurance application is not just paperwork for a premium. Your answers become representations the insurer relies on. If a claim arises and an answer turns out to have been inaccurate, the insurer may dispute or reduce the claim, and in serious cases rescind the policy. Treating the form as a technical attestation, rather than a sales form, protects you.
Insurers ask about controls because those controls correlate with whether an incident becomes a small event or a large one. Understanding the reason behind each question helps you answer correctly and prioritize improvements.
Who should complete it
The finance or risk lead should not complete the form alone, and neither should IT. The most accurate applications are completed by IT and security with review by a business owner who can confirm scope, and with the broker involved to interpret wording.
- IT or security completes the technical answers with evidence
- A business owner confirms revenue, data volumes and critical operations
- The broker and legal counsel review wording before signature
